NSW Country Women's Sevens side had a large Hunter contingent going into the Inaugural National Rugby Sevens Tournament in Sydney on the weekend. The 13 member squad included 9 Hunter representatives, captained by veteran Angela Hipwell. Country had a strong start to the National Championship with a win over Northern Territory (24-17, Emma Gillogly 1,Vanessa Foliaki 1, Stevie Shiels 1, Erin Green 1, 2 conversions) The team came together well in their first game as a unit, with individuals finding their feet and combining well with teammates. The girls backed up again an hour later against a strong ACT 1 side, and despite solid periods of attack and defence, Country was unable to convert their opportunities and ACT came away with the win (29-0). The final pool match was an evenly fought battle against Victoria, with both sides giving it their all and Victoria coming out on top (26-12, Emma Gillogly 1, Sarah Riordan 1, Margaret Watson 1 conversion). After a disappointing finish, Country ranked third in the pool matches. This meant an early semi final the next day, with an 8.20am kick off against the only international team, Papua New Guinea. The Country girls had a slow start with PNG dominating the first half and going into half time with a score of 17-0. It was a different team that came out firing in the second half, and almost immediately Country got points on the board, courtesy of an outside ball from Toyah Nicholas to Erin Green who looped around for a 40m sprint down the wing. A second try followed soon after, scored by Amie Clarke in the corner. With 2 minutes to go, Country had another break with Margaret Watson dominating the PNG defence, before handing off to Vanessa Foliaki, and then regathering the ball on the inside to burst over the line for a third try. Watson then converted to tie up the score at 17 all. A penalty to PNG in the final 20 seconds saw PNG go over again to take the game 22-17. Player's Player for the tournament was Emma Gillogly from New England. Country will come together again in a couple of weeks time to prepare for up-coming tournaments.
Hunter Representatives were Margaret Watson, Miranda Smith, Toyah Nicholas, Erin Green, Lauren Denniss, Stevie-Lee Shiels, Arlyn Mills, Angela Hipwell, and Sarah Riordan.

2012 Bowlo 10s Pre-Season Comp A Success!
The annual Bowlo 10s day held on Saturday at Gibbs Brothers Oval, was a roaring success, with 4 teams participating in a round robin style competition. The teams, Wanderers, University, Hamilton and a Tamworth-Merewether joint team, all displayed an impressive level of skill and gamesmanship over the entire day, impressing Hunter selectors and spectators. The overall winners on the day were University, who remained unbeaten in their 4 games, only letting in 2 tries in defense. All teams had a number of new players, who started their rugby careers admirably and are sure to make an impact this season! Refs’ points went to Mel Howard (Hamilton), Toyah Nicholas (Wanderers), Kiya Simon (Merewether) and Erin Green (University). The proceeds from the BBQ and drink sales went towards the Shave for a Cure campaign and we are very happy to have raised several hundred dollars for the cause! Special thanks to everyone involved in organising the event, especially the referees, Tamworth players and coach for travelling to play, and Renee Cross for overseeing the entire day!
